He shook his head. "How about Azkaban on one side and living with someone you hate on the other?"

He laughed, brittle and angry. "I'll be going to Azkaban someday anyways, sir. At least, if I don't die first. I'm..what's the term? 'Guilty by association'? Ha!" He pushed himself to his feet, stretching. Truly, he was a work of art, all pale skin and long, delicate limbs. But there was something about him that was just so...drawn. He had the slightly pinched look of someone who had been forced to grow too fast, both mentally and physically. "Give me something worth fighting for, Brutus. Because right now, Caesar is offering me more." Ah, historical references. Gotta love 'em.

"Yea, heard that term a lot at my own trial." He takes in a deep breath, taking in the smell of the garden.

And...And he whirled around, eyeing the other man with gleaming eyes and snarling lips. He looked...feral. Animalistic. "Then you know. You know that horrible feeling when you want to keep yourself from hurting someone, killing them even, but you can't because he's standing right...right there, watching and wanting you to screw up..." And abruptly the fight seemed to leave him, and he doubled over, a shaking hand reaching up to clutch at the right side and blue eye of his face.

Caith moved quickly and set his hand on Jesse's shoulder... healer insincts. "Jesse? You alright??"

He shook his head slightly. "Old wounds..." It was wheezed, as if he had something caught in his throat, but when he lifted his head there was nothing. Just the cold blue and brown of his eyes. But, if one looked close enough...In the middle of all that blue, there was a line of reddish-brown that went straight down through the pupil. It almost looked like a crack, as if his eye were plaster or concrete and not living tissue. "I'll...be fine..."

He shook his head and pulled away from Caith, reaching down into his robes and withdrawing a tiny bottle of some misty-blue and purple potion. With long-practed ease he uncorked the bottle and tipped the contents into his open mouth, nearly sighing with relief as soon as the poition hit his tongue. He tucked the bottle and cork back into his robe when he was done, his eyes closed. "Better," he sighed.

"What is that... if you don't mind me asking?"

He glanced over at Caith, squinting at him through his half-closed blue eye. "Painkiller. Wormwood, dragon's blood, licorice, star anise and dittany. Boiling water," Added, almost as an afterthought. But what was truly odd was the fact that, besides the dragon's blood, all of those herbs were ingredients in absinthe.

absinthe?

((Yeah, absinthe. Absinthe is an emerald-green liqueur distilled from wormwood and other aromatics, including angelica root, sweet-flag root, star anise, and dittany, which have been macerated and steeped in alcohol. It was invented in the 1790s by a Dr. Pierre Ordinaire, a Frenchman who lived in Switzerland, and the liqueur became enormously popular, particularly in late-19th-century Paris. Genuine absinthe is 70% to 80% alcohol. Because it caused harmful neurological effects (due to the presence of thujone, a toxic chemical in wormwood), absinthe was banned in many countries; where it still is available it is no longer as toxic as it once was. Absinthe is hallucinogenic to a certain degree.))

((Precisely. Today, it's illegal most everywhere.))
He cocked his head, blinking slowly. "Mhm," murmured qithout true words, just a quiet sort of agreement. Quite suddenly he slumped, and slid down to the ground, sighing. "Mm..." No more pain. That was nice. But Caith was watching, so he'd have to be more careful about making the potion in the future.
